Topic 7- Heat and energy changes Flashcards
1
Q
What happens in an endothermic reaction?
A
- More energy is taken in (to break stable bonds)
- BREAKS BONDS
- Than given out (making bonds, they are more unstable)
2
Q
What happens in an exothermic reaction?
A
- Heat is give out
- MAKES BONDS
- Unstable bonds become more stable giving out heat
3
Q
What type of reaction is salt dissolving in water?
A
Endothermic
4
Q
What type of reaction is neatralisation?
A
Exothermic
5
Q
What type of reaction is displacement ?
energy wise
A
Exothermic
6
Q
What type of reaction is precipitation ?
A
Exothermic or endothermic
7
Q
Describe an endothermic energy graph
A
- Rises (activation energy)
- Decreases slightly
8
Q
Describe an exothermic energy graph
A
- Rises (activation energy)
- Drops rapidly (energy given out)
9
Q
How to calculate the energy change?
A
- Work out the energy needed in (broken bonds)
- Work out the energy given out (made bonds)
- Find the difference
- If the difference is negative it is endothermic
10
Q
What is activation energy?
A
- The minimum energy needed for a reaction to occur
