2
Q

Xylem function

A

Transports water and mineral ions. The roots absorb the water and mineral ions from the soil. These enter the xylem in the root and travel upwards in the stem

Q

What is sucrose

A

A soluble complex sugar made especially for transporting energy it is made in leaves with the sugars from photosynthesis and from starch in storage organs such as swollen roots and stems

Q

Water uptake by roots

A

The main functions of roots are to anchor the plant in the soil and to take up water and mineral ions. Water passes into the root by osmosis

14
Q

Wilting meaning

A

The Stomata close up to reduce transpiration. If the plant still does not get enough water it will start to wilt. The cells have lost so much water they can no longer be (turgid) full of water

Q

What is translocation

A

Sucrose and amino acid are soluble in water and are transported. To the other parts of the the plants in solution in the phloem

17
Q

What is the source

A

The part off The plant where sucrose and amino acids begin their journey

18
Q

What is The sink

A

The leaves release sucrose and amino acids in the phloem. the part where they end their journey is a sink

19
Q

How is glucose used in translocation

A

Broken down in respiration to provide energy
Built up into starch for storage in roots and in seeds
Built up into cellulose for new cell walls at growing root tips and shoot tips
