Topic 5 Flashcards
What is a catalyst
Speeds up chemical reaction and remains chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction
How enzymes work
Breaking large molecules into small ones
Building up large molecules from small ones
Converting one small molecule into another
Five properties of enzymes
They are all proteins
Each enzyme catalyzes one particular metabolic reaction
They can be used again and again
They are influenced by temperature
They are influenced by pH
What are the two parts of the enzyme called
Substrate and active site and they are complementary
Effect of temperature on enzymes
Slow at low temp
Increases as temp increases
40c is max
Decreases after
How does increasing temp increase enzyme activity
Greater kinetic energy and they move around more quickly and more chances of them colliding
What happens when enzyme goes past max temp
It denatures meaning it can’t catalyze the reaction
Effect of ph on action of a protease experiment
Set up a bath at 40c and label 3 test tubes
Using a syringe put 5cm3 of egg white into each test tube
Add 2cm3 for 1.sodium carbonate 2. water and 3. dilute hydrochloric acid
Then add 1cm3 of protease and compare every minute and wait until no further change
