What did Puritans want to do to the Church?
Rid it of all Catholic associations and follow a ‘purer’ form of worship
When did Puritans begin to spread?
During the reign of Edward VI (1547-53)

Geneva, Zurich, Frankfurt and Strasbourg
Who was a famous and influential Puritan?
John Calvin
Why did Puritans oppose the 1559 Religious Settlement?
It involved too many Catholic elements
On what grounds did Puritans oppose bishops?
There was no mention of their role in the Bible
What were some behaviors that Puritans opposed?
Bowing when the name of Jesus was said, kneeling to recieve communion, giving a marriage ring, celebrating saints day and decorating churches
What actions did Puritans oppose?
Entertainment on Sundays, gambling, visiting the theatre, being drunk and swearing
What were the three types of Puritans?
Moderate Puritans, Presbyterians and Separatists
What was a Separatist?
The most radical Puritan, they wanted to breal away from the national church and have every church run its own affairs on a parish by parish basis
When was the Vestments Controversy?
1566
What did Puritans oppose about Vestments?
They believedd that the clothing was too similar to the clothes of a Catholic priest
Who was Thomas Cartwright?
A professor of divinity at Cambridge
What proposals were made by Thomas Cartwright?
He suggested that the church abolish the archbishop and all bishops, that each church should be ruled locally by ministers and elders from the community, and that the congregation elects these ministers
Who was John Stubbs?
A puritan and political commentator
What did John Stubbs critisise Elizabeth about in his pamphlet in 1579?
Her marriage talks with the French, Roman Catholic, Duke of Anjou
How did Elizabeth punish Stubbs?
He was arrested, put on trial and charged with sedacios writing; he had his right hand cut off and was imprisioned for 18 months
When were the Marprelate Tracts?
1588-89
What were the Marprelate Tracts?
A series of anonymous pamphlets that bitterly attacked the church and bishops; they contained violent and sarcastic language, completely opposite to how Puritans believed they should behave
How did people respond to the Marprelate Tracts?
Protestants wrote their own pamphlets against Puritan views, most namely Richard Hooker in 1593
Who were notable Puritans within the Privy Council?
The Earl of Leicester and Sir Francis Walshingham
What did Walter Strickland do?
In April 1571, he proposed a bill in parliament calling for the introduction of a new Book of Common Prayer, as well as for the banning of vestments, using a ring in marriage and kneeling during communion
How was Walter Strickland punished?
He was prevented from attending the House of Commons by the Privy Council
