Q

Essay: Analyze why plantation owners attempted to restrict religious gatherings of enslaved people, even though religion was often used as a tool of control. (80 words)

A

Slave owners didn’t want their enslaved people to have religious gatherings because the owners didn’t want the slaves to get any ideas about running away or rebelling against their masters. The story of Moses leading his people to freedom inspired the enslaved African Americans about freedom which the slave owners did not like. Furthermore, religion was used as a tool of control by taking out verses from the Bible and using them out of context. Just like 1 Peter 2:10 about obeying their masters even in the harshest of punishments.
