Essay: Describe two factors that led Jackson to attack the Second Bank of the United States, and then describe two actions he took in order to destroy it. Do you think it was a right or wrong decision and why?
Jackson hated the Second Bank of the United States with a passion. He believed that the bank was unconstitutional and undemocratic. The Bank was in charge of the loans that the state banks made. But when the bank thought that the state was overdue with the Bank’s money, the Bank put a limit on the state’s future loans. This upset Jackson because the farmers and merchants needed to borrow money so they could run their businesses. Another reason that Jackson attacked the Bank was because Nicholas Biddle was president of the Bank. Jackson accused Biddle of giving “special privileges” to some men. To take action against the Bank, Jackson vetoed a Bank bill to renew the Bank. This surprised men who earlier wanted to pass this renewal bill thinking that Jackson would not veto it to help his running in the election race. Furthermore, after winning the presidential race, Jackson ordered the bank to shut down immediately. It was supposed to close down in 1836 but Jackson was impatient. I believe that what Jackson did was right. Even though his actions didn’t turn out for good a couple years later, I believe his decisions worked out in the long run.
