Reverse TOV
Hitler had never accepted the terms and had promised to restore lands lost in 1919 as well as build up Germanys armed forces
Unite all German speaking people
TOV denied Germany the right to national self-determination and Hitler wanted to unite all German speaking people in one nation.
Lebensraum
In order to unite all german speaking people, living space was needed.
Germany would have to expand into the east to take over Poland and East Russia.
Anschluss
Hitler supported the union with Austria that had been forbidden.
Destroy communism
Hitler wanted to destroy the USSR and communism and he believed that communists helped defeat Germany in WWI. He was also convinced that Stalin wanted to take over Germany.
Start of Hitlers chancellorship
Italy was viewed as the biggest threat to international peace, the League of Nations was seen as weak when dealing with Italy and Japan.
Disarmament conference 1932-1934
60 nations to discuss how to prevent war, Germany wanted each nation to reduce its arms to their lowest levels.
Hitler withdrew from the conference and announced Germanys army would increase to 300,000 and he would set up a new air force with 1000 aircraft
Membership with the League of Nations was also withdrawn in 1933
Non aggression pact with Poland 1934
Accepting the Polish borders and encouraging trading
The pact was set to last 10 years
France became frustrated as they had trade deals with Poland
Attempted Anschluss with Austria 1934
The Austrian Nazi party were campaigning for a union
Dollfuss (chancellor) outlawed the Nazis
Nazis attacked a radio station and announced his resignation
Dollfuss was assassinated
This attempt to seize power failed due to Hitlers concerns about Mussolini
Return of Saarland 1935
A plebiscite was held and 477,000 to 48,000 voted to rejoin Germany
This was administered by the league of nations
Rearmament and conscription
Hitler renounced parts of the TOV
Conscription was introduced
The army and navy were openly built up
Hitler stated rearmament was self defence
Britain and Germany entered into a naval treaty in June 1935, allowing Germany to increase it’s fleet to 35% the size of Britain’s.
Invasion of Abyssinia
Italy broke the rules of the League of Nations
This destroyed cooperation between Britan France and Italy
This pushed Hitler and Mussolini closer.
The Rhineland 1936
The Rhineland was demilitarised under the TOV
Allied troops withdrew in 1935
In 1936 Hitler reoccupied while Britain and France were distracted
Hitlers popularity increased and in a referendum 98.8% voted for reoccupation.
The Rome Berlin axis 1936
Italy and Germany agreed to work together on foreign policy and stop the spread of communism.
Anti-Comintern pact 1936
Hitler signed a treaty with Japan to limit the spread of communism and influence of the Soviet Union.
Furthered relationships between Germany Japan and Italy.
