providing manual labour
introduced the RAD, which was compulsory for men aged 18-25 from 1935, and extended to women in 1939. members lived in labour service camps and worked for low pay.
hide unemployment
unemployment figures didn’t include jewish people, unmarried men, women or those in concentration camps.
only 35,000 out of 25 mil male workers were listed as unemployed.
Rearm and constrict
conscription was reintroduced in 1935, increasing the army greatly. it grew by 1.3 million between 1933 and 1939. heavy industry expanded and by 1939, 26 million marks a year were being spent on military vehicle production.
replace trade unions DAF
trade unions were banned and replaced with the German labour front (DAF). the DAF banned strikes and decided wages. workers were given job security and leisure programmes.
keep workers happy KDF
workers leisure time was improved, trips such as concerts, theatre trips, museum tours, sporting events, holidays and cruises were arranged through the organisation ‘strength through joy’ (KDF). in 1938 10 mil people went on KDF holidays.

lead up to Kristallnacht
8th of November 1938 a polish jew shot an official at the German embassy in Paris
Goebbles used this to organise anti-jewish demonstrations

9-10th of November
100 jews killed
20,000 sent to concentration camps
7500 businesses destroyed
Hitler and Goebbles presented this event as a spontaneous event, not done by Nazis
shops were smashed, synagogues burned
