Topic 7: equilibrium Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium
In a closed system , Concentration constant and rate of reaction constant and equal for forward and reverse reactions
Types of equilibrium systems
Chemical reaction
phase
solubility
Magnitude of equilibrium constant
Kc»_space; 1 - reaction going nearly to completion
Kc «_space;1 - reaction hardly proceeds
10 ^-2 < Kc < 10^2 - both reactants and products present in noticeable amounts
Le chateliers principle
if a system at equilibrium is subjected to a small change the equilibrium tends to
shift so as to minimize the effect of the change.
Factors affecting position of equilibrium
Change in concentration
- shift to side with less concentration
Change in temperature
- shift to side depending on endo or exo
Change in pressure
- shift to side with more or less moles of gas
Adding a catalyst
- increase the rate at which eq is reached, no affect on position
