Topic 6: Chemical kinetics Flashcards
Rate of reaction
increase in the concentration of one of the products per unit time or decrease in the concentration of one of the reactants per unit time
measured in mol dm^-3 s^-1
How to measure rate of reaction
measure the change in concentration, measure mass or volume change when a gas is evolved, absorption using spectrometer when there is a colour change, pH changes when there is a change in acidity and electrical conductivity when there is a change in ionic concentration
How to find rate of reaction at a single point in time using graph
find the gradient of the graph at that point in time
what is maxwell boltzmann distribution
moving particles in gas or liquid dont travel at same velocity, the distribution shows the different kinetic energies of particles (the faster the move the more kinetic energy)
y axis - number of particles
x - axis - kinetic energy
temperature increases kinetic energy (however area under curve remains the same)
Collision theory
- particles must collide
- particles must collide with correct geometry so reactive parts come in contact
- particles must have sufficient energy, higher than activation energy
