What are hormones?
Hormones are produced by endocrine glands and released into the blood.
What is the hypothalamus?
Produces hormones such as TRH and CRH
What is the pituitary?
It is the master gland and tells all the other glands what to do
What is the thyroid?
Secretes thyroxine
What is the adrenal?
Secretes adrenaline
What are the testis?
Secretes testosterone
What are the ovaries?
Secretes oestrogen and progesterone
What is the point for having thyroxine?
Thyroxine is a hormone that controls the metabolic rate
What is the menstrual cycle?
Menstruation is the break down of the uterus lining.
During the second week the lining of the uterus builds up
Ovulation is the release of the egg
Days 14 to 16 is when fertilisation is likely to take place
If fertilisation happens then the lining will stay the same
What are the hormones that control the menstrual cycle?
Oestrogen
Progesterone
FSH
LH
What is IVF?
IVF is fertilisation outside a woman’s body. This treatment is offered to couples who are having difficulty conceiving a child
What is blood glucose regulation controlled by?
Insulin and glucagon
What is pancreatic control?
Pancreas detects rise in blood glucose
Increases the amount of insulin and decreases the amount of glucagon
Insulin means cells remove glucose and stores it as glycogen
Pancreas detects fall in blood glucose
Increases the amount of glucagon and decreases the amount of insulin
Glucagon causes cells to convert glucagon into glucose to release into the blood
What is the cause of type 1 diabetes?
The immune system has been damaged and this means the pancreas can’t produce insulin
How do you control type 1 diabetes?
Inject insulin to keep blood glucose levels safe
