Topic 7 - Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
What are alkenes?
A
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
2
Q
Addition of Hbr to alkenes
Conditions
A
Alkene + HBr –> Bromoalkane
Bubble HBr gas in at room temperautr
3
Q
Addition of H2SO4 to alkenes
Conditions
A
Alkene + H2SO4 –> Alkyl Hydrogensulfate
Use conc. sulfuric acid at room temperautre.
4
Q
Addition of Br2 to alkenes
Conditions
A
Alkene + Br2 –> Dibromoalkane
Shake with bromine water at room temperature.
5
Q
Bromine water test
A
- Alkenes decolorize bromine water as addition takes place across the double bond.
- Alkanes remain the same.
6
Q
Addition reactions of unsymmetrical alkenes
A
- Forms a major product and a minor product
- Major product is formed from the most table carbocation
- The more alkyl groups a carbocation has the more stable the carbocation.
7
Q
Addition polymers
A
Long- chain molecule formed by the repeated addition reactions of many alkene monomers.
8
Q
Unplasticised PVC
A
- Hard, rigid and inflexible
- Window and door frames
