Topic 7 Flashcards
Proteobacteria
Gram neg
most common bacteria
-chemolithotrophs, chemoorganotrophs, phototrophs
-morphologically diverse (alpha, beta, omegam gamma and delta
The main groups
PROTEOBACTERIA
PSEUDOMONAS
Anozygeneic photosynthesis
-photosynthesis inhibited by o2
-wavelength determined by bacteriochlorophylls and cerotenoids
Purple sulfur bacteria
Photoautotrophs of GAMMAPROTEOBACTERIA
oxidize H2S-> S during co2 reduction
Winogradsky column
Photoautotrophs of gammaproteo bacteria
From top to bottom
Cyanobacteria (o2) so at top
Purple NONSULFUR bacteria
Purple sulfur bacteria
green sulfur bacteria
fermenters, iron, sulfate reducers
Methyltrophs and methanotrophs
Methyltrophs: Oxidize C1 compounds
-non-organic, no c-c bonds ex ch2oh
Methanotrophs:
oxidizes methane to methanol
-methane mono-oxyeneate does this
-NEED O2, obligate aerobes
-need o2 and c1
found in aquatic habitats, space between where methane formed (Anoxic) and oxygen needed
-found in catal rumen and swamps
Nitrifiers
AZOTOBACTER
Used reduced N as e- source
(chemolithoautotrophs)
-nitroSOcoccus or anything with nitroSO: so are ammonia oxidixers
-Nitrobacter: nitrite NO2 oxidizers
(have intercytoplasmic membrane that houses this bacteria)
NH3 to NO2 to No3
FISH
detect nitrifying bacteria using this
fluorescently tagged
Ammonia oxidixing: red
Nitrite oxidizing: Green
Nitrospira
originally thought bactera can only exist doing either ammonia oxidiation OR nitrite oxidation, however, this bacteria is a commammox bacteria, so it can do both
REMEMBER THIS CUZ u may think its a nitrite oxidizer due to name but it is actually a nitrite and ammonia oxidizer
