Topic 6C: Diabetes Flashcards
What is Type 1 diabetes? (causes)
- genetic predisposition/viral infection. It is when the immune system attacks beta cells in the islets of Langerhans therefore insulin can not be produced
Treatments for Type 1 diabetes
- Regular insulin injections
- Insulin Pump
What is hypERglycaemia?
- when blood glucose conc increases and stays high
- kidneys can not reabsorb all the glucose so some is excreted in urine.
What is hyPOglycaemia?
When too much insulin injected produces a dangerous drop in blood glucose levels
Causes of Type 2 diabetes
- lack of exercise
- obesity
- age
- poor diet
What is Type 2 diabetes?
-when beta cells dont produce enough insulin
OR
-when body cells doesn’t respond properly to insulin
Treatments for Type 2 diabetes?
- balanced diet
- losing weight
- regular exercise
- Glucose lowering medication
What can Type 2 diabetes lead to?
- visual impairment
- kidney failure
What do health advisors recommend about developing type 2 diabetes?
- eat diet low in fat, sugar and salt/ high in fruit and veg
- regular exercise
- lose weight
Name a NHS campaign for diabetes
Change4life
What are the changes food companies have made for products to be more healthy?
- sugar alternatives to sweeten food
- reducing the fat, sugar and salt content in products
What experiment is used to determine the concentration of glucose solution?
ColOrimetry
How do determine the concentration of glucose in a urine sample? (colorimetry)
- Do a serial dillution of different conc of the urine.5 test tubes)
- Add Quantitative Benedicts reagent is added to see if it contains glucose
- from blue solution it goes colourless
- it is placed a colorimeter
- used to measure the light absorbance
- make a calibration curve with results-concentration of glucose(x) and absorbance (y)
