Topic 6 - The Uk in the 21st Century Flashcards
where is population density highest in the UK
it is highest in major cities such as Birmingham, London, Glasgow
what is population density
the number of people living in a given area
where is population density lowest in the UK
Mountain regions e.g north west scottland
where is rainfall greatest in the UK
The north and west of the UK
e.g Althea in scottland
where is rainfall lowest in the UK
The south east of the Uk
e.g London
what is the land use of the UK
- most land (70%) is used for agriculture
- under 10% of land in the UK is built on
- Forest covers around 13% of the land in the UK
what 2 issues are assosiated with high population density and/ or rainfall
- housing shortages
- water stress
what is the population of the UK
in 2001 the population was 59 million, 2015 population was 65 million
- population has increased
- growth rate decreased
how does high population density cause housing shortages
- example: London has 60,000 new houses are needed to keep up with the population growth
- a shortage of houses drives up prices so some can not afford to live there
how does high population density lead to water stress
- many areas with higher population have a lower annual rainfall
- causes water stress where there isnt enough water to meet peoples needs
- this requires the transfer of water between areas of water surplus and areas of water deficit
what is the population structure of the UK
- In 2001 highest number of people were betwen 30-39yr olds due to high birth rates in the 1960’s
- in 2015 highest number of people were 40-49
- between 2001-2015 the propertion of 20-29yr olds due to young mirgants
- people ages 0-39 increased by 3% between 2001-2015
- people over 39 increased by 18%
Overall shows that the UK’s population is getting older
what is DTM
DTM - (The Demographic Transition Model)
- shows how a country population is likely to change as it develops, based on changing birth and death rates
what is annual rainfall and where is it most comon in the uk
the highest levels of rainfall are in the north and west of the uk
why will the south east of england be an area of server water stress in the future
water stress means that there is hardly any water which could cause shortages of food such as fish as the less water on coastal areas the more fish are being killed off
