Topic 6 : The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the primary function of the respiratory system
To supply the blood with oxygen so that the blood can deliver oxygen to all parts of the body
How does the respiratory system supply the blood with oxygen
By breathing
When we breathe in oxygen what do we exhale
Carbon dioxide
What body parts achieve respiration
Mouth, nose, trachea, lungs and diaphragm
When we breathe in oxygen through the mouth and nose what does it pass through
The larynx (where speech and sounds are produced) and the trachea (a tube that enters the chest cavity)
What are the two smaller tubes that the trachea splits into called
Bronchi
What does the bronchus divide into
Bronchial tubes
Where do the bronchial tubes lead directly too
The lungs
What are the spongy, air filled sacs called in your lungs
Alveoli
Roughly how many alveoli are in adult lungs
600 miillion
What are the alveoli in your lungs surrounded by
Capillaries
What does the inhaled oxygen pass into
The alveoli, then diffuses through the capillaries into the arterial blood
What blood enters the capillary network from the heart (pulmonary artery)
Deoxygenated
What blood enters the heart (via the pulmonary veins)
Oxygenated
What does waste-rich blood release
Carbon dioxide
What do you exhale out of your lungs
Carbon dioxide
What helps pump the carbon dioxide out of the lungs and pull oxygen into the lungs
The diaphragm
What is the sheet of muscle (shaped like a parachute) that lies across the bottom of the chest cavity
The diaphragm
What does the diaphragm do make us breathe
Contracts and relaxes
Oxygen is pulled into the lungs when the diaphragm
Contracts
Carbon dioxide is pumped out of the lungs when the diaphragm
Relaxes
