what is the peripheral nervous system?
neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body
what is the central nervous system?
the brain and spinal cord
what is a receptor?
cell/protein on cell surface membrane that detects stimuli
what is an effector?
muscles or glands that bring a response to a stimulus
what is a sensory neuron?
neuron that transmits electrical impulses from receptors to the central nervous system
what is a relay/intermediate neuron?
neuron that transmits electrical impulses between sensory neurons and motor neurons
what is a motor neuron?
neuron that transmits electrical impulses from the central nervous system to effectors
what is a reflex?
a body’s response to a stimulus without a conscious decision
what are the steps of a reflex arc?
stimulus receptor sensory neuron relay neuron in spinal cord motor neuron effector response
what is a stimulus?
change in the internal or external environment
what is the peripheral nervous system made up of?
somatic nervous system and the automatic nervous system
what does the somatic nervous system control?
conscious activities, eg running
what does the automatic nervous system control?
unconscious activities, eg digestion
what is the automatic nervous system made of?
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
what is the job of the sympathetic nervous system?
prepares the body for action/ fight or flight
