Topic 6 Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction
Is how fast the reactants are changed into products
2 examples of slow reactions have
- rustling of iron
- chemical weathering- acid rain damage to limestone buildings
An example of a moderate speed reaction
Metal magnesium reacting with an acid to produce a gentle stream of bubbles
What type of reaction is burning
A fast reaction but explosions are even faster and release lots of gas
How can you find the speed pf a reaction
By recording the same amount of product formed, or the amount of reactant used up over time
What a steeper line represent
The faster the rate of reaction
what is Le Chatelier’s principle
the idea that if you change the the conditions of a reversible reaction at equilibrium, the system will try to counteract the change
what happens to the equilibrium if you decrease the temperature? what does this mean for products?
it will move in the exothermic direction to produce more heat
you will get more products for the exothermic reaction and fewer products for the endothermic reaction
what happens to the equilibrium if you raise the temp?
what does this mean for products?
the equilibrium will move in the endothermic reaction to try and decrease the temp.
you will get more products for the endothermic reaction and fewer products for the exothermic reaction
what does changing the pressure only affect an equilibrium involving …
gases
what happens if you increase the pressure, what will the equilibrium do, what direction will it move to
it tries to reduce the pressure- it moves in the direction where there are fewer molecules of gas
what happens if you decrease the pressure
the equilibrium tries to increase it- it moves in the direction where there are more molecules of gas
what happens if you change the concentration of the products or the reactants
the system will no longer be at equilibrium
what does the system do if you increase the concentration of the REACTANTS
it tries to decrease it by making more products
what does the system do if you decrease the concentration of the products
the system tries to increase it again by reducing the amount of reactants
