Q

Naming Molecular Compounds

A
  1. Write the entire name of the first element
  2. Change the ending on the name of the second element to -ide
3.Use a prefix to indicate the number of each type of element in the formula.
ONLY MONO for the second element

Q

Naming Ionic Compounds

A
  1. The name includes both elements in the compound, with the name of the metallic element first
  2. The non metallic element is second. Its ending is changed to -ide
  3. Subscripts indicate the ratio of ions in the compound.

Q

Common characteristics of Molecular Compounds

A
  • They do not form ions in a solution
  • Usually do not conduct electricity
  • Solid, Liquid, or gas at room temp
  • Have low boiling points and melting points and the attraction between the molecules are weak

Q

Common characteristics of Ionic Compounds

A
  • They are very strong and have a high melting point because if strong ionic bonds
  • They are solid at room temp
  • Form ions in solution
  • They are good conductors when they are in a solution
