Topic 6 Flashcards
1
Q
Molecular Compound
A
Usually formed by 2 non metallic elements.
They share electrons
2
Q
Ionic Compound
A
Formed from metallic and non-metallic elements.
One element gives electrons and the other takes. This forms ion(positively or negatively charged atoms.)
3
Q
Diatomic Molecule
A
Molecules that are made up of 2 atoms of the same element
4
Q
Naming Molecular Compounds
A
- Write the entire name of the first element
- Change the ending on the name of the second element to -ide
3.Use a prefix to indicate the number of each type of element in the formula.
ONLY MONO for the second element
5
Q
Naming Ionic Compounds
A
- The name includes both elements in the compound, with the name of the metallic element first
- The non metallic element is second. Its ending is changed to -ide
- Subscripts indicate the ratio of ions in the compound.
6
Q
Common characteristics of Molecular Compounds
A
- They do not form ions in a solution
- Usually do not conduct electricity
- Solid, Liquid, or gas at room temp
- Have low boiling points and melting points and the attraction between the molecules are weak
7
Q
Common characteristics of Ionic Compounds
A
- They are very strong and have a high melting point because if strong ionic bonds
- They are solid at room temp
- Form ions in solution
- They are good conductors when they are in a solution
