Topic 4 Flashcards
Element Symbols
Symbols made up of 1 or more letters used to identify elements. First Uppercase, rest lowercase
Metals vs metalloids vs Non- metals
Metals- all solid at room temp except for mercury, they are shiny, malleable and ductile and they conduct electricity and heat well
Metalloids- Solids, shiny or dull, may conduct electricity, poor conductors of heat, brittle and not ductile
Non- Metals- Some gases, Some solid, Bromine liquid, they are not very shiny, poor conductors of heat and electricity, brittle and not ductile.
Chemical Family
a term used to describe a group of related elements that have similar properties
Alkali Metals
Most metals are reactive, but the alkali are extremely reactive. They hold an unpaired atom that tends to rid of the electron by forming a compound
Alkali Earth Metals
The alkali earth metals react fairly vigorously but not as much as alkali metals.
Halogens
Halogens are substances that are also extremely reactive. They also have an unpaired electron but they tend to gain one instead of give one. They are also extremely corrosive and harmful.
Noble Gases
Noble gases are extremely nonreactive. They almost never react with anything to form compound. Their electron shells are all full, so they are very stable. Even when they do react their compounds soon decompose, allowing the noble gas to separate into atoms again.
