Topic 5 (Energy Changes) Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction
An exothermic reaction is one which transfers energy to the surroundings, usually by heating. This is shown by a rise in temperature
What are 3 examples of exothermic reactions
•Combustion
•Neutralisation
•Oxidation Reactions
What is an endothermic reaction
An endothermic reaction is one which takes in energy from the surroundings. This is shown by a fall in temperature
What is an example of endothermic reaction
Thermal decomposition
What is bond breaking
Endothermic as energy is taken in to break the bonds
What is bond forming
Exothermic as energy is released when bonds are formed
If the energy of the reactants is higher than the energy of the products is the reaction endothermic or exothermic
Exothermic
If the energy of the reactants is lower than the energy of the products is the reaction endothermic or exothermic
Endothermic
What is a cell
An electrochemical cell is a basic system made up of two different electrodes in contact with an electrolyte.
What is a fuel cell
A fuel cell is an electrical cell that’s supplied with fuel and oxygen and uses energy from the reaction between them to produce electrical energy
