Topic 5 Denazification And Democratisation Flashcards
Democratisation in the soviet sector
German communists turned to walter ulbricht as their leader
Aim was to gain control in Berlin while appearing as democratic as possible
There was no clear plan
Among allies on what should replace the nazi system
Soviet parties
Political parties were allowed again so KPD and SPD were reformed and merged in 1946 to become SED socialist unity party
Other parties that emerged were CDU AND LDPD these groups were meant to present a common front against nazism
Mass organisations covering
culture youth women and trade unions were also formed under communist control
Democratisation in western sector
Unlike soviets parties were. It formed by authorities but by people
SPD and KPD emerged but had no success KPD banned
Christian conservative parties re emerged to form CDU Christian democratic union
Liberal parties merged to become free Democratic Party FDP
Denazification in western zone
Soon became removing the veneer of nazism rather than removing it fully
People tended to play down nazi past than honestly denouncing it hence escaped wilut punishment
Unlike east there was no radical reconstruction
Denazification of soviet zone
As in western sector there was soon a difference between active nazis and nominal ones with the latter excused if they conformed to communism
Marxist historians claimed that
Nazism was the result of fascism which was in turn capitalism in crisis
To get rid of Nazism they needed to get rid of capitalism so economic structure had to be changed
Nazi controlled property was confiscated and given to landless farmers and refugees
Banks and factories seized some became soviet controlled companies
