Topic 5 Flashcards
What are the properties of transition metals
High melting point(because of electrostatic forces of attrsction)
What is corrosion and how does oxidation apply?
Corrosion= occurs when a metal continues to oxidise gradually becoming weaker over time
How can the rusting of iron be prevented (exclusion of oxygen and water)
Painting over iron
Coating iron with plastic
Using oil or grease on iron
What is galvanisation and how does it stop rust in iron
Galvanisation = dipping clean iron into molten zinc to apply a coating
What type of rust protection is galvanisation and why?
Galvanisation is sacrificial protecting where iron is dipped into a more reactive metal
Therefore the coating rusts protecting the inside
What is the arrangement of pure metals
Same size
Regular arrangement
Layers slide over eachother making them soft and malleable
