Topic 3(complete Later) Flashcards
What do acids produce in aqueous solution
Acids produce hydrogen in aqueous solutions (H+)
What do alkalis produce in aqueous solutions
Alkalis produce hydroxide in aqueous solutions (OH-)
Effect of acid and alkali of phenolphthalien
Acid = turns colourless
Alkali = turns pink
Effect of acid and alkali on Methly orange
Acidic = red
Alkaline = yellow
Effect of acid and alkali on litmus solution
Alkaline = blue
Acidic red
Effect of acid and alkali on litmus paper
Blue litmus paper goes red in acidic and stays blue in alkaline
Red litmus paper goes blue in alkaline and stays red in acidic
How do you investigate the change in pH by adding calcium hydroxide to hydrochloric acid
Method
Add HCl to beaker and record pH
Use scales to measure mass of calcium and add to solution
Record pH and stir
Keep adding weighted calcium until there Is noc change to pH
How do you investigate change in pH to hydrochloric acid by adding calcium hydroxide
Analysis
Draw a line graph with mass added on horizontal axis and pH on vertical axis
Draw line of best fit
Definition of weak acid and alkalines
Weak = acids which don’t completely dissociate in the solution
Definition of strong acid
An acid which completely dissociates in an aqueous solution
What does concentrated mean
Larger amount of substance in a given volume of solution
What does a base do
React with an acid to form a salt and water
Acid + base —- salt + water
How to test for hydrogen
Use a burning splint which is held over the open end of a test tube filled with the gas
Should hear a “squeaky pop”
Hoe to test for carbon dioxide
Bubble gas through limewater (calcium hydroxide solution) and it will turn cloudy
