Topic 4 - The UK's Evolving Physical Landscape Flashcards
What are the three main types of rocks?
- Sedimentary
- Igneous
- Metamorphic
How are sedimentary rocks formed? Give 2 examples of sedimentary rocks.
Sedimentary rocks are formed of small particles that have been transported, eroded and deposited.
Two examples of sedimentary rocks are:
- Limestone
- Chalk
How are Igneous rocks formed? Give an examples of an Igneous rock.
Igneous rocks are created by volcanic activity when magma or lava cools, forming rocks made of crystals that are hard.
An example of an Igneous rock is:
- Granite
How are metamorphic rocks formed? Give 2 examples of metamorphic rocks.
Metamorphic rocks are created from existing rocks changed from high pressure and heat. They form rocks which are crystalized and very hard.
Examples of metamorphic rocks include:
- Slates (compressed shale)
- Schists (from mudstone)
