Q

Why do strong acids react faster than weak acids?

A

Strong acids have more H+ ions to react with other substances, so the rate of reaction is faster.

11
Q

What makes a strong/weak acid?

A

1.Strong acids ionise fully in water, so all acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions.
2.Weak acids do not fully ionise in a solution, only a small proportion of acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions

16
Q

What do acids and metal carbonates form after reacting?

A

acid + metal carbonate –> Salt + Water + Carbon dioxide

17
Q

What happens when you react metal and acid?

A

acid + metal –> salt + hydrogen

18
Q

How can we learn about a metal’s reactivity when we react it with an acid?

A

The more bubbles thay are released, the faster the reaction is going, the faster it is going the more reactive it is.

19
Q

What does reacting a metal with water form?

A

metal + water –> metal hydroxide + hydrogen

20
Q

What does a metals reaction with water tell us about it’s reactivity?

A

The more reactive a metal, the more it will react with water.

21
Q

What is an electrolyte?

A

A molten or dissolved ionic compound.

22
Q

What does cryolite do?

A

Lowers the melting point of aluminium oxide.

23
Q

What happens at the cathode in an aqueous solution, when H+ ions and metal ions are present?

A
  1. If the metal ions form a metal more reactive than hydrogen, then hydrogen gas will be produced
  2. If the metal ions form a metal less reactive than hydrogen, then a solid layer of the pure metal will be produced.
24
Q

What happens at the anode in an aqueous solution, when OH- ions and halide ions are present?

A
  1. If OH- and halide ions are present, then a halogen will be formed
  2. If there are no halides, then the OH- ions are discharged, and oxygen is formed.
25
Q

What is the method for a titration?

A

1.Add a set volume of some alkali into a conical flask
2.add two or three drops of indicator
3.Fill a burette with some acid of known concentration, making sure you do this below eye level
4.Do a rough titre where you add the acid quite quickly, whilst swirling the conical flask, so you can have an idea of awhere the end point is
5.Then do it again, but going especially slowly near the end point, when the indicator changes colour
6.Repeat this 3 times

26
Q

What type of substance are metal oxides and metal hydroxides?

A

bases

27
Q

What is a redox reaction?

A

Reactions where electrons are transferred
