Amphibia
includes frogs, salamanders, caecilians
Amphibian charachteristics
thin, water and gas permeable moist skin, contain mucous glands that keep the skin moist, the skin is a second respiratory substance to complete gas exchange, ectothermic (low metabolic rate due to heat exchange with environment), use a buccal pumo to ventilate lungs, must reproduce in water, external fertilization, eggs lack shells and extraembryonic membranes, have external eardrum, gills only in larval stages, three chambered heart
Salamanders
amphibians with tails in adult stage (and larvae stage), lay eggs in water with aquatic larvae, have external gills, and some are aquatic while some are terrestrial, some walk and not jump
Frogs
lose tails at maturity, hind legs modefied for jumping, well-developed ears
Toads
frogs with leathery skin
Ceacilians
legless amphibians, resemble earthworms and snakes, blind, borrowers as they live in a network of tunnels, use internal fertilization
