Topic 3 Flashcards

You will be studying the intergumentary system. The integumentary system makes up the coverings of the body and is comprised of skin, hair and nail. In this topic, you will be introduced to the structure and function of the human integumentary system in health and disease.

Q

Desribe the two different types of skin (thick and skin)

A

Thick skin can only be found in the palms of the hand and soles of the feet. There are no hair follicles and the dermis is folded into ridges to increase gripping capacity. The epidermal layer is also thicker.

Q

The dermis consists of two distinct regions, the superficiaal part and deeper part. Describe each of these regions.

A

The superficial region is composed of areolar, connective tissue and fine elastic fibres.
The deeper part is composed of dense irregular connective tissue plus collagenous and elastic fibres.

16
Q

Descibe the features of stratum granulosum

A

In thick skin, few layers of flattened cells.

17
Q

Descibe the features of stratum corneum

A

Consists of several to many layers of flattened keratinised cells.

18
Q

Descibe the features of stratum lucidum

A

Cannot be identified in thin skin. Several layers of flattened cells.

19
Q

What is the function of langerhans cells and where can it be found?

A

Forms a defensive network. Found in stratus spinosum. Phagocytic cell.

20
Q

What is the function of merkel cells and where can it be found?

A

For touch sensation, found in stratum basale.
