What do these stand for and what do they mean? EAR RDI AI UL
EAR: Estimated Average requirement
RDI: Recommended Dietary Intake–> if the average daily dietary intake level sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all healthy individuals in a life stage/gender group.
AI: Adequate Intake–> used when an EAR can’t be determined because of insufficient data. The AI can be used as a goal for individual intake but is based on experiments
UL: upper level of intake –> highest level of continuing daily nutrient intake likely to pose no adverse health effects in almost all individuals
What are the uses of RDIs?
Assessing adequacy of diets Menu planning Planning therapeutic diets Planning food supplies Nutrition labelling
Food groups and their main nutrients. What are the nutrients found in: Vegetables, legumes Fruits Grain/cereal, food, bread, rice, pasta, noodles Meat, fish, poultry, egg, nuts legumes Milk, yogurt etc
What are the nutrients found in:
Vegetables, legumes: caritonoids, vit C, folate, dietary fibre
Fruits: vit C, dietary fibre and other vitamins
Grain/cereal, food, bread, rice, pasta, noodles: carbs, protein, iron, dietary fibre, thiamine, folate, iodine
Meat, fish, poultry, egg, nuts legumes: protein, iron, zinc, vit B12, long chain omega 3 FA
Milk, yogurt etc: calcium, protein, riboflavin, vitamin B12
