Topic 2b - Measuring Personality Flashcards

1
Q

What are the aspects of self-report personality scales?

A
  • Introspective
  • Subjective
  • Structured
  • Contain more than one item per construct (for each trait and facet)

Measures one dimension of personality - one scale (extravert scale)

A

Collection of scales that measure multiple dimensions of personality

Q

What is random error? (measurement error)

A

Non-systematic variation (human error / slightly higher or lower than true score)
Answers can depend on mood at the time
Average can balance out - close to true score

Q

What is systematic error? (measurement error)

A

Test score always slightly higher or lower than true - problem with the study
- response set bias, socially desirable bias

6
Q

What is response set biases?

A

Refers to peoples tendencies to respond in specific way - habitual response rather than thinking properly. Straightlining- insufficient effort responding: all responses line up

Q

What is acquiescence bias?

A

Tendency to agree
This can be resolved by reverse scored items - have to think about the Q differently (disagree)

Q

What is midpoint responding?

A

Neither agree nor disagree
This can be resolved by removing the mid point option

Q

What is socially desirable response bias?

A

Individuals want to have a personality that is seen as desirable. Deceptive intent - presenting self in best light. To overcome = lie detector items (undesirable statements that are true for everyone)

Q

What is the Mach V Scale?

A

2 socially undesirable answers, one shows high Machiavellianism
People high in Mach likely to be deceptive and manipulative - hard to measure

Q

What are examples of behavioural measures of the big 5?

A
  • Conscientiousness: PPTs given computer task, speed of completion was a measure of conscientiousness
  • Agreeableness: PPTs were told their name wasn’t on the list - measure of agreeableness
  • Correlations between extraversion and openness behaviour measures and the traditional self report scale for the big 5 but they weren’t even behavioural measures
  • However there was low concurrent validity

Q

What is a pro of self report measures?

Q

What is the Implicit Personality Assessment?
Implicit Association Test (IAT)

A

Steffans and Schulze Konig (2006)
IAT - used to measure automatic associations to stimuli
Half of the trials made about self congruent show high levels of conscientiousness
Half trials paired incongruently with trait and self
Fastest in pairing words when the trait matches you
If conscientiousness - fastest at trials where responses of words to describe self are same as conscientious words
Measure of personality trait = which condition fastest in

Q

What is ‘other report’ to measuring personality?

A

Someone else rating your personality
Depends on external manifestations of feelings (how the person reveals their thoughts and feelings)
Proportion of situations the observer will actually see the individuals traits

17
Q

What did Funder (1995) find about ‘other report’ measurements?

A
  • Have to produce trait relevant behaviour
  • Behaviour is available to the rater
  • Rater has to have seen the trait and detect
  • Rater must be able to correctly interpret
18
Q

What is Self-Other knowledge (SOKA model)?- Vazire 2010

A
  • Some traits are more frequent and easily observable
  • Neuroticism observed by others is low as it manifests as thoughts
  • Extraversion manifests as overt behaviour (easily observable)
19
Q

Who is better at measuring evaluativeness (intellect)?

A

Others - difficult to make actual judgements when it links to our ego

20
Q

What are projective tests of personality?

A

Describe and tell a story about an ambiguous / meaningless stimuli
Projection of their own personality into what they perceive and say
Scored according to content and focus
Less dependent on introspection
Less prone to bias and faking
However they are subjective and complex

21
Q

What is the Apperceptive Personality Test? - Holmstrom et al. 1990

A

Make up a story about a picture - open ended about a person in the image
Rate how the character appeals (adjectives) - the number and adjectives reveal things about personality - interpretations of someone else
E.G high extraversion would rate characters as appearing happy and leader-like !
