Topic 28 Monotheism & Polytheism Flashcards
1
Q
What do Christians believe about one God?
A
- Single creator God which we preach to (10 commandments ‘worship one god’)
- Trinity -> three beings that form one entity like a three leaf clover
- Father son + Holy Spirit refer to one + same god -> cannot say who God is without referring to son + HS
2
Q
Why do Christians believe in one God?
A
- Religious upbringing
- Conversion experience eg St Paul’s
- Stated in Bible, 10 commandments + Deut 4, ‘the lord is god; there is no other besides him’
- Ockham’s razor - simplest to worship one God, must be right
- Only one God can be omnipotent
3
Q
What are the problems with the Christian belief in one God?
A
- Trinity (3 things worshipped)
- Atheists -> Bible not enough evidence to prove existence of God -> belief + cannot be empirically proven
- Feminists -> monotheism = highest form patriarchal power, god anthropomorphised as male + opposed to femininity, feeling + sensuality
4
Q
What is polytheism?
A
- belief in many Gods
- eg Hinduism (over a million gods + goddesses worshipped)
5
Q
Why do ppl believe in polytheism?
A
- Religious upbringing
- Converted to polytheistic religion -> easier to relate to variety of gods (represent different things, eg Ganesh = good fortune + success) prayers more directed
- More logical, unrealistic to have one god who rules everything (eg not one king who rules whole world)
- Feminists = goddesses to pray to - understand needs more + emulate characteristics
- Problem of evil + suffering (incompatible w god as omnibenevolence, omniscient + omnipotent) not a prob with many gods
6
Q
What are the problems w polytheism?
A
- omnipotence of deities diminished due to sheer number
- christians argue polytheism = wrong (goes against 10 commandments) very exclusivist
- can’t be a creator god who made everything at the beginning
