TOPIC 2//Plant Organisation/ Transpiration/ Translocation Flashcards
What is an Epidermal Tissue
This covers the whole plant
What is a Palisade Mesophyll Tissue
Part of the leaf where most photosynthesis happens
What is a Spongy Mesophyll Tissue
Inside the leaf which contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of cells
What are xylem and phloem
they form a network of vascular bundles which deliver water, mineral ions and food to entire leaf
What is the epidermal tissues covered with
waxy cuticle which helps reduce water loss by eevaporation
what is unique about the upper epidermis
they are transparent so light can pass through it to the palisade layer
what part of the leaf has the most chloroplast
Palisade layer because they are near the top of leaf where they can get the most light
what is the function of the stomata
lower epidermis which let carbon dioxide diffuse directly into the leaf. the opening and closing of stomata and controlled by guard cells
What are phloem tubes
- Transport food substances made in leaves to the rest of plant for usage or storage.
- Made of elongated liiving cells with small pores in the end walls to allow cell sap to flow through
- the transport goes in both directions
- this process is called translocation
What are Xylem tubes
- Made of dead cells joined end to end with no end walls between them and hole down the middle
- strengthened with a material called lignin
- They carry water and mineral ions from roots to stems and leaves
- They use transpiration
What is Transpiration stream
Transpiration is the movement of water from the roots throught the xylem and out of the leaves ( LOSS OF WATER)
What is Transpiration caused by
caused by the evaporation and diffusion of water from a plants surface
What does Transpiration cause in plants
Creates a sliight shortage of water in the leaf and so more water is required to be drawn up
