A Jewish name meaning ‘God is with us’
Virgin Birth
The belief that Jesus is fully human but does not have a human Father
Co-exist
Living in harmony together
Son of Man
A title that can refer to just a human being or a human who is given power by God
Ichthus
The symbol of a fish, based on a Greek acronym which means ‘Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour’
Alpha and Omega
A symbol made from the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet which shows us that God and Jesus are eternal - the beginning and end of everything
Chi-Ro
A symbol made from the first two letters of Jesus’ name in the Greek alphabet
Sacred Heart
A representation of Jesus that focusses on his burning love for humanity
Crucifix
A representation of Jesus on the cross on which he died
Law
The commandments and teachings laid down in the Old Testament
Tradition
Values and practices which have been passed down - ‘stood the test of time’
Salvation
Freedom from sin and from the eternal separation from God that is brought about by sin
Apostolic Exhortation
A letter or document from the Pope encouraging and advising followers in their religion
Divine Life
The shared love of the Trinity between them
Scarament
Rites and rituals through which the believer receives a special gift of grace from God bringing them closer to him and further in their religion - ‘an outward sign of inward grace’
Laying of Hands
A symbolic gesture that passes down the power of the Holy Spirit
Sanctify/sanctification
To make something holy
Witness
When someone experiences and understands God’s love and acts on it
Imago Dei
‘In the image of God’ - the idea that humans are made in his likeness
