topic 2 - features of stm and ltm Flashcards
what is the duration of the stm?
about 18 seconds (temporary store)
what is the capacity of the stm?
seven items
what is the duration of the ltm?
can last for a few minutes up to an entire lifetime
what is the capacity of the ltm?
it can hold a potentially unlimited amount of information
how is memory encoded in the stm?
it is mainly encoded acoustically
how is memory encoded in the ltm?
it is mainly encoded semantically which is when we understand things.
what is the process of memory? where does it enter first etc?
sensory information first enter the short term memory store, when information is rehearsed enough it can be transferred to the long-term memory store.
how is information kept in the stm?
through ‘rehearsal’ which is when we repeat information over and over to ourselves.
how is information forgotten in the stm?
new incoming information pushes out older information as we exceed a limited capacity of memory in the stm, otherwise known as displacement. (displacement and decay)
how is information forgotten in the ltm?
some memories decay as that memory is not used, while others might be overwritten by new information otherwise known as interference, or we cannot find the memory because we have lost the link. (decay, interference and retrieval failure)
