Topic 2 - Disorders of Transmission and Person Centred Practice Flashcards
How will muscles be affected by disturbances at the myoneural junction?
May result in weakness.
Uncoordinated movement.
Fatigue.
Myasthenia Gravis - Symptoms
Muscles weakness.
Eye muscles often involved first.
Next facial and mastication muscles.
Complications when respiratory muscles affected.
Myasthenia Gravis - Pathophysiology
Autoimmune
Destruction of ACh receptors
MS - Pathophysiology
Demyelinating
Chronic inflammation of CNS
Disruption of transmission - partial/full
MS characteristics
Most frequent neuro disease in young/middle aged adults.
Huge variation of symptoms.
Near normal life expectancy.
MS - Classification
Benign - single event ,no progression in 10 years.
Relapsing remitting - most common.
Secondary progressive - R/R then steady worsening without relapse.
Primary progressive - steady worsening without relapse
Guillain Barre Syndrome - Characteristics
Autoimmune of PNS.
Gradual recovery after a few weeks.
40-60% case occur after bacterial infection.
Guillain Barre Syndrome - Clinical features
Weakness.
Respiratory muscle weakness.
Typically begins with peripheral paraesthsia (glove/stocking).
Cranial nerve involvement 50% cases.
Guillain Barre Syndrome - Secondary impairments/complications
Disuse/atrophy. CV deconditioning. Stiffness. DVT. Infection/pneumonia. Mental and social issues
Guillain Barre Syndrome - Recovoery
Hugely variable.
Median time for complete recovery 6 months
Guillain Barre Syndrome - - Treatment
IV immunoglobulin.
Physio
Person Centred Practice
Work with patient to set SMART goals.
Active listening, explanation.
Treat the person, not the problem.
Comes back to ICF.
