-NH2 (nitrogen atom bonded to alkyl groups- primary secondary or tertiary) not necessarily NH2

What are 2 ways of making aliphatic amines?
A
- halogenoalkane with ammonia
- reduction of nitrile

How do you make an amine with a halogenoalkane?
A
heat with ammonia in a sealed container under pressure or mix with concentrated ammonia solution

How are amines made from a nitrile?
A
-reduced by lithium tetrahydridoaluminate in dry ether (so no water affects reaction)

How are aromatic amines produced?
A
- through the reduction of nitro-benzene
- tin and concentrated HCl are used and the mixture is heated under reflux
