Topic 10- Equilibrium I Flashcards
what does dynamic equilibrium mean?
the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backwards reaction
(concentrations of reactants and products does not change)
give an essential condition for an equilibrium mixture
-equilibrium reaction takes place in a closed system where reactants and products cannot escape
state Le Chatelier’s principle
If a system at equilibrium is altered, the position of equilibrium moves in the direction that reduces the effect of the initial change
what effect does a catalyst have on the equilibrium position?
no effect
what conditions affect the Kc value?
-temperature
what type of system is Kc relevant for?
homogeneous systems in equilibrium
what does Kc being greater or less than 1 suggest for the position of equilibrium?
greater than 1= shifted to the right
less than 1=shifted to the left
what effect does decreasing the temperature have on the Kc value in an endothermic reaction?
Kc decreases (the endothermic reaction isn’t favoured so equilibrium shifts to the left)
what affect does increasing the temperature have on the Kc value of an endothermic reaction?
Kc increases (the endothermic reaction is favoured so positions shifts to the right)
what effect does decreasing the temperature have on the Kc value in an exothermic reaction?
Kc increases (the exothermic reaction is favoured so positions shifts to the right)
what effect does increasing the temperature have on the Kc value in an exothermic reaction?
Kc decreases (the exothermic reaction is not favoured so positions shifts to the left)
What’s meant by a homogeneous system?
a system in which all components are in the same phase
Define a heterogeneous system?
where at least 2 different phases are present
Give the equation for the Haber process
N2 + 3H2 —> 2NH3 (reversible)
What kind of reaction is the Haber process?
exothermic
