Topic 17 Flashcards
Chromosome
Long length of DNA which carries genetic information in the form of genes
Gene
A section of DNA that codes for a protein
Allele
An alternative version of a gene
Diploid nucleus
A nucleus that contains 2 sets of chromosomes (46)
Haploid nucleus
A nucleus that contains a single set of chromosomes (23)
Mitosis
A nuclear división that results in 2 genetically identical cells
Meiosis
A reduction division which halves the chromosome number from diploid to haploid resulting in 4 genetically different cells
Inheritance
The transmission of genetic information between generations
Genotype
The alleles an organism has
Phenotype
The observable features of an organism
Homozygous
Having 2 identical alleles for a particular gene
Hetorozygous
Having 2 different alleles for a particular gene
Dominant allele
An allele that is always expresses if it is present
Recessive allele
Allele that is only expressed when the dominant version of the allele is not present in organisms genotype
Sex linked characteristic
A feature that is coded for by a gene located on a sex chromosome, making it more common in one sex than another
