Topic 1 Flashcards
Species
A group of organisms that produce fertile offspring
Growth
The process by which the size and dry mass of an organism increases permenantly
Birds
- feathers and wings
- scaly feet
- beaks for feeding
- warm blooded
- lay eggs to produce offspring
Sensitivity
The ability to detect and respond to changes in its external or internal environment
2 types of plants
Flowering (daisies) and non flowering (moss)
Mammals
- hair/fur
- sweat glands
- wings + external ears
- warm blooded
- give birth to young
- females produce milk from mammary glands
Fish
- live in water
- skeleton made of bone
- scales
- gills
- cold blooded
- lay eggs
Myriapods
- 1 set antena
- many legs
- centipede/milipede
Crusteaceans
- jointed legs
- 2 sets antenna
- (most) live in water
5 kingdoms (examples)
- Animals (mammals/fish)
- Plants (trees/grasses)
- Fungi (mushrooms/yeast)
- Prokaryotes (single celles, no nucleus; bacteria)
- Protoctis (eukaryotic, singke celled or multiple; algae)
Fungi
- have structure called mycelium: made up of hyphae which contains lots of nuclei
- cell wall made up of chitin
- reproduce using spores
- store carbs as glycogen
Binormal naming system
Genus + species
Amphibians
- live on land + water
- smooth, permeable skin
- adults: lungs
young: gills - cold blooded
- lay eggs
2 Animal groups
Vertabrates + Invertabrates
Excretion
The removal of metabolic waste products and of substances that are in excess of what the organism needs
Monocots
- thin pointy leaves
- one cotelydin
- petals multiple 3
- veins run parallel
Arachnids
- 4 pairs of legs
- do not have antenna
- 2 body segments (head,thorax,abdomen)
- no wings
Respiration
The chemical reactions that happen in cells to break doen nutrient molecules and release the energy needed for metabolism
Reproduction
The process that produces more of the same type of organism
Nutrition
The taking in of substajces used for energy, growth and developmemt im organisms
Reptiles
-live on land
- dry scaly skim
- lungs
- cold blooded
- lay soft shelled eggs
Movement
An action made by an organism or parts of an organism which results in a change of place or position
Insects
- 3 pairs of legs
- 3 segments in body (head, thorax, abdomen)
- compound eyes
- 1 set of antenna
- (most have wings)
Dicots
- 2 cotelydons
- round leaves
- 4/5 petals
- veins branch outwards
