Topic 1.2: The mole concept Flashcards
Mole
Fixed amount, n, of a substance.
Avogadro’s constant (NA)
6.02 x 1023 mol-1
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
Relative abundance
Measure of the percentage that occurs in a sample of the element.
Relative atomic mass (AR)
Weighed average of the atomic masses of its isotopes and their relative abundances.
Relative molecular mass
Sum of Ar values of the individual atoms or ions in one molecule.
Formula of molar mass
n = m / Mr
Qualitative analysis
Determining which elements are present in a compound.
Quantitative analysis
Determining the relative masses of elements which allows them to work out their exact composition
Empirical formula
Simplest whole number ratio of atoms or amount of each element present in a compound.
Molecular formula
Actual number of atoms or amount of elements in one structural unit or one mole of the compound.
