Topic 11: Equilibrium II Flashcards
1
Q
What is partial pressure?
A
- the total pressure of a gas mixture is the sum of all the partial pressure of the individual gases
2
Q
What is a mole fraction and its formula?
A
- the proportion of a gas mixture that is a particular gas
- number of moles of gas / total number of moles of gas in mixture
3
Q
What is partial pressure formula
A
mole fraction of gas / total pressure of the mixture
4
Q
to find Kp in heterogenenous equilibria, what do you include?
A
- only include gases
5
Q
Does temperature alter the equilibrium constant?
A
- yes
- if changing the temp causes less product to form, the equilibrium moves to the left, and the equilibrium constant decreases
- if changing the temperature causes more product to form, the equilibrium moves to the right and the equilibriium constant increases
6
Q
Why does concnetration not affect the Kc at a fixed given temp?
A
- if the concentration of one thing changes, then the concentration of the other musts change to keep the value of Kc the same
7
Q
Why does pressure not affect the Kc at a fixed given temp?
A
- increasing the total pressure increases the partial pressure of each of the products and reactants
- the equilibrium shifts to the side with fewer moles of gas to decrease the pressure
- overall effect is that Kp and Kc are unchanged
