Topic 10 - Prokaryotic Regulation Flashcards
Encode products the affect expression of other genes
Regulatory Genes
Encode a protein product that effects the structure of the cell.
Structural Genes
Any sequence of DNA that is not converted into other form but functions as it is in situ, affecting only the DNA to which it is physically linked.
Cis-acting
The product of a DNA, which may be a protein or an RNA, that diffuses away from its site of synthesis to work elsewhere.
Trans-acting
Structural genes with related functions that are grouped together.
Polycistronic mRNA
Prokaryotic DNA that clusters genes with similar functions.
Operons
When the binding of the regulatory protein to the operator turns transcription on.
Positive, Activator
When the binding of the regulatory protein to the operator turns transcription off.
Negative, Repressor
When the presence of a signal turns transcription on.
Inducible
When the presence of a signal turns transcription off.
Repressible
The regulatory gene in the lac operon in E. Coli
lacI
Structural gene that encodes for beta-galactose, which is used in the process of turning lactose into glucose.
lacZ
Structural gene that encodes for permease which allows lactose into the cell.
lacY
Regulatory gene, Operator in the lac operon.
lacO
Lactose regulation of lac operon
Negative Inducible
