Topic 1 - How Drugs Work Flashcards
Lock and Key Analogy (Endogenous Ligand)
Receptor = Lock
Endogenous Ligand = Key
Ligand fits into Receptor, can “turn” activating the receptor
Lock and Key Analogy (Drug)
Drug = Similar Shaped Key
Drug mimics the Endogenous Ligand, can also fit into, “turn” and activate the receptor
Lock and Key Analogy (Antagonists)
Antagonist = Pencil
Blocks drug from entering the receptor and preventing it from activating receptor
Lock and Key Analogy
(Positive Allosteric)
Positive Allosteric Modulators = Oil
Increases drugs ability to respond by making it respond faster
Lock and Key Analogy
(Negative Allosteric)
Negative Allosteric Modulators = Honey
Decreases drugs ability to respond by making it respond slower
