Topic 1: ATP Flashcards
Describe the structure of ATP
Ribose sugar joined to an adenine base and 3 phosphate groups.
What is ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate
Describe how ATP is broken down.
-Hydrolysis reaction, using a molecule of water.
-ATP into ADP (adenosine diphosphate) +Pi (inorganic phosphate)
-Catalysed by ATP Hydrolase
Describe how ATP is resynthesised.
-Condensation reaction, removing a molecule of water
- ADP + Pi into ATP
-Catalysed by ATP Synthase
How are the properties of ATP suitable for its function?
-Releases energy in small amounts: Little energy lost as heat
-Phosphate groups can phosphorylate other compounds: makes them more reactive
-Soluble: Easily transported
-Releases energy instantaneously
-Can be rapidly re-synthesised.
