Exam Qs Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the induced - fit model and how an enzyme acts as a catalyst.

A

Active site changes shape slightly so it’s complementary to the substrate. The substrate binds to the active site to form enzyme-substrate complexes. Enzymes lower the activation energy by providing an alternate pathway.

Q

Retrograded starch is a competitive inhibitor of amylase. Suggesting how eating stale bread could help to reduce weight gain.

A

Retrograded starch binds to the active site so less starch is hydrolysed into maltose, so less glucose is absorbed.

Q

Explain how the active site of an enzyme cause a high rate of reaction.

A

Lowers the activation energy as the induced fit cause the active site to change shape slightly so when it forms Enzyme-Substrate complexes it causes stress on bonds
