Topic 1 Flashcards
Weather
Conditions of temperature, air pressure, cloud cover, precipitation, humidity, etc that occur at a particular time and place
Climate
The average weather conditions of a region over a long period of time, usually at least 30 years
Biosphere
The parts of earth that have the conditions suitable for supporting life, it is made up of 3 parts,
atmosphere: air
Lithosphere: earth
Hydrosphere: water
What is the composition of the earth
78% nitrogen
21% oxygen
Layers of the atmosphere
Troposphere( 0-10km)
Average temp 15C, nearly all life contained in this layer
Stratosphere(10-50km)
Temp increases as you go up, contains ozone gas, which absorbs uv light
Mesosphere
Temp decreases in this layer
Thermosphere
Gets extremely hot, auroa causes by earth magnetic field in this layer
Magnetic field:
: force field that deflects charged particles emoted by the sun
Lithosphere the solid part of the earth. Floats on a semi molten mantle layer, life is found at depths of several km
Hydrosphere
All of the earths water that supports life, only 3% freshwater 97% saltwater
