Biomes Flashcards
Biome
A large geographical region with a specific climate and precipitation plants and animals are adapted to
Tundra
Bitter cold, Highwinds meaning no trees or tall plants
- little rainfall, but accumulation on top of permafrost
- mountaintops around the world can be alpine tundra
Taiga(boreal forest)
- large terrestrial biome
- Dominated by cone bearing, evergreen trees(conifers)
- adapted to high snowfall
Deciduous forest
Mid latitudes, enough moisture to support trees. Deciduous forest trees drop their leaves in the winter
Grassland
Deep, rich topsoil means a lot conversion to agriculture. Seasonal drought, occasional fires and grazing by large mammals prevent shrub and tree establishment
Rain forest
Greatest University of plants and animals, clothes tree canopy, pronounced vertical stratification
Desert
- sparse rainfall
- extreme temp due to very dry air
- organisms adapted to conserve water
- How many protective adaptations of plants to deter herbivory
