Climates Affect Daily Living Flashcards
Global warming potential
Global warming potential(gwp): a measure of the ability of a gas to trap thermal energy in the atmosphere
Nitrous oxide has the highest GWP
Carbon dioxide
A naturally occurring greenhouse gas, if doubled the desert would be more prominent in Alberta
Carbon source vs carbon sink
Carbon source: any process that releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
Carbon sink: any process that absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
Halocarbons
Synthetic chemicals that can absorb significant amounts of thermal energy
Eg. Air conditioning, waterproof coating, fire retardants
Radiant energy
Solar energy or energy that is transmitted as electromagnetic waves
-made up of different wavelengths which make an electromagnetic spectrum
Insolation
Amount of solar energy received by region of earths surface.
-depends on latitude or characteristics of the biosphere
Angle of inclination
Angle of inclination refers to the degree by which earths poles are tilted from the perpendicular of the plane of its orbit, 23.5 degrees
Angle of incidence
The angle between array falling on a surface in the line of the perpendicular to the surface. At the equator it is nearly zero, the larger the angle, the greater the solar radiation is spread out and the temp is lower
