Detergent= gives clean feeling
Abrasive /polishes= gives tooth smooth shining surface
Sweetening/flavoring= taste good
Humectants= prevent drying out
Binders= prevent separation of solids and liquids
Preservatives= prevents bacterial growth
Water= provide moisture and lucubration
What are three abrasives found in TP?
Calcium carbinate, Pyrocalcium Phosphate , and Dicalicium Phosphate
If a pte mouth tends to be cariogenic which abrasive would not be recommended and why?
Calcium carbonate decomposes quickly in an acid environment so not recommend for cariogenic pte
Which paste is considered to be more abrasive, creams or gels?
Creams

Prior to dental appointment to reduce introral microorganisms. Astringent- cutting down bacteria Numbing agent
What is an anodyne?
Numbing effect
List three chemotherapeutic agents in mouth rinses?
Chlorhexidine, stannous Fluoride and essential oils
What is an example of an oxygenating mouth rinse? What are the benefits and pitfalls of its use?
Hydrogen Peroxide
Benefits= Cheap
Pitfalls= Kills good bacteria, makes tissues white, carcinogenic and Black hairy tongue
If a pte presents with xerostomia, what oral condition are these pte at risk for, and what if any mouth rinse may be recommend and why?
Xerostomia ptes are at risk for increases caries Biotene is recommend because it simulates saliva or fluoride rinse = remineralization.
