What are sealants?
Preventive form of dentistry to prevent decay, placed in the P+F, Flourable resin and plaster, Plastic material that is boned to tooth surface. (etched)
Name the two ways in which a sealant is cured?
Self cured and light cured
What is the main reason a sealant may fail?
Any moisture; saliva, air/water syringe or Pts breath
What surfaces are sealants performed on?
P+F, Occlusal and B + L grooves
Name two criteria that determine the need for a sealant?
Deep p+f , preferably newly erupted teeth, less than 4 years and high caries risk
What is the main method of isolation when performing a sealant?
cotton roll, dental dam or dry angle
Name the steps in placing a sealant:
1. Examine tooth- stains/existing decay , tooth anatomy 2 .pumice to clean tooth 3. Isolate 4. Etch 30 secs 5. Rinse 30 secs 6. Dry- frosty or chalky white 7. Apply sealant material 8. cure 20 secs 9. Check sealant w/ mirror and explorer for smoothness and voids 10. floss 11. Check occlusion w/ articulating paper 12. Rinse BPA layer 13. Post op
Describe a situation where a rubber dam may be used to do a sealant, and why are they not used all the time?
If a restoration is being done in the same quadrant.
Because of excess saliva.
When using a self cure sealant what precaution must be taken to help ensure a good sealant?
Time efficient and mix thoroughly
How long sure the etch procedure last?
30 secs
What is the visual desire of the tooth surface when drying after the etch procedure?
chalky or frosted
how long should the rinse procedure last after etch?
30 secs
What product is used to polish that surfaces of the teeth prior to a sealant and why?
Pumice because it doesn’t have fluoride
